New generation of hoops are exceeding expectations

Hoops have fallen in with a bad crowd in the past few years, and for what has seemed like the longest time it has been considered neither elegant nor cool to wear hoops that hula with your shoulders, or at least your jaw line. But good news for those of us slightly more in touch with our inner rude girl than we should be – hoops are back.

But these are not the chunky Creole lug stretchers that have booted hoops out of fashion circles for so long; neither are they the demure brand of mini hoops that seem to survive any shift in the trend climate. This new generation of hoop is oversized yet elegant, with a minimal, fluid design in in your choice of alloy, which should be polished to a mirror-like finish.

Such a simplistic circular slick of gold or silver is surprisingly easy to customise, and while the general shape might remain just about the same there are myriad finishes that can be applied to give customers a choice of hoop. As well as offering hoops in the holy trinity of alloy colours – white, yellow and rose – hoops can also be hammered, twisted, bent, dipped, chipped, twirled you name it. There are also some beautiful examples of stone-set hoops, but for me I think this trend works best with plain metal.

At British silver jewellery brand Georgiana Scott hoops have become so popular that it has created a new retail concept called The Hoop Station. These are separate units selling only the brand’s hoops and there are now eight Hoop Stations in department stores in London and the south of England. The company has also just launched a wholesale business for its hoops.
